Heat illness
Assess heat risk from temperature and humidity via the NWS heat index, and confirm the required heat-illness provisions are in place.
This module records heat-illness prevention assessments, modelled on Cal/OSHA §3395. It computes the NWS heat index (Rothfusz regression) from temperature and humidity to set a risk band, and flags an assessment as deficient when a required provision is missing.
Record an assessment
- Go to Heat illness and use the Record a heat assessment form at the bottom.
- Pick the Site and Area, and enter the temperature (°F) and relative humidity (%).
- Tick the provisions in place: drinking water, shade, rest/recovery periods, acclimatization plan, heat-illness training, and emergency response.
- Click Record. The assessment joins the list with its computed heat index and risk band.
Read the triggers
- Shade trigger (80 °F): when the temperature or heat index reaches 80 °F, five provisions are required — drinking water, shade, rest/recovery periods, training, and emergency response. Rows at this level show a shade badge.
- High-heat trigger (95 °F): at 95 °F the acclimatization plan is required too, and the row shows a high-heat badge with an amber highlight.
- The risk band follows the NWS heat-index categories: minimal (below 80 °F), caution (80–89), extreme caution (90–102), danger (103–123), extreme danger (124 °F and above).
- An assessment missing any required provision is deficient (red row) and lists what's missing.
Close gaps
A deficient row shows a CAPA button — click it to open a corrective action for the missing provisions. Once raised, the row links to that CAPA.
What happens automatically
- The heat index and risk band are computed for you from temperature and humidity.
- The dashboard counts heat assessments, high-heat days, and deficient assessments.
Tip: reassess when conditions change through the day — the heat index, and therefore what's required, moves with the weather. Use the Site filter to review one location's history. The winter counterpart is cold stress.
