MSHA workplace exams
Record MSHA competent-person workplace examinations each shift, log adverse conditions and their correction, and keep exams on a recurring cadence.
Workplace examinations satisfy MSHA's competent-person requirement (30 CFR 56/57.18002, 77.1713): each working place is examined each shift, and any adverse conditions and their correction are recorded.
Record an exam
- Go to Workplace exams and use the Record an examination form.
- Pick the site/mine, name the working place (e.g. "Crusher area, 3 West"), choose the examiner (competent person), and set the shift (day, afternoon, or night) and exam date.
- Click Record exam. A clean exam shows a green clean badge.
Log and correct adverse conditions
- Open an exam and use Add condition to record each adverse condition with its area.
- Open conditions are highlighted; click Mark corrected once fixed, or Raise CAPA to drive a larger correction through a CAPA.
- The exam reads open until every condition is corrected, then flips to corrected.
Recurring schedules
Set up a recurring exam schedule per working place: pick the site, working place, examiner, and a cadence in days (1 = each shift), then click Add. Pause or Resume a schedule as needed.
What happens automatically
- A scheduled exam that's due or overdue notifies the schedule's examiner — and a working place that's never been examined counts as due, so new schedules can't be quietly ignored.
Tip: a cadence of 1 day means the working place is examined every shift — the standard for active workings.
