Asbestos abatement

The asbestos module manages abatement projects under 29 CFR 1926.1101 and 40 CFR 61 — work-class classification, the regulatory notification, abatement, and final PCM air clearance (0.01 f/cc or below) before a space is reoccupied.

Create a project

1. Go to Asbestos and use the Create an asbestos project form.
2. Choose the Site and give the project a name.
3. Pick the work class — the 1926.1101(b) classification (Class I–IV) that sets the required controls — plus the location and a material description.
4. Choose Create project. It appears in the table as Planned.

Run the lifecycle

Each row shows the action for its current stage:

1. Notify agency — records that the regulatory notification was submitted; the project becomes Notified.
2. Start abatement, then Abatement complete when removal work is done.
3. Clearance sample… — enter each final air sample inline (sampling location and the PCM result in fibers/cc) and click Record sample. Repeat for every sample; click done to close the inline entry.
4. Reoccupy — this button only appears once clearance has passed. If you try to reoccupy before then, the action is blocked with an error stating what's still needed.

The clearance gate

Clearance passes only when at least 5 samples are recorded and every one is at or below 0.01 f/cc. The moment the passing sample set is complete the project flips to Cleared automatically. The clearance column shows awaiting clearance (amber row), passed (green), or reoccupied w/o clearance (red) — the last one flags a serious regulatory gap.

What happens automatically

• Status moves to Cleared as soon as the sample set passes — no separate approval step.
• Reoccupancy is hard-blocked until clearance passes; every lifecycle step is written to the audit trail.
• The dashboard counts asbestos projects, abatements awaiting clearance, and any reoccupied-without-clearance projects.

Correct a gap

Use the CAPA button on a project row to raise a high-priority corrective action — for example to drive an overdue clearance. The row then links to the CAPA so you can follow it to closure.

Tip: classify the work before the crew starts — the work class determines the containment and monitoring expectations for the whole project.
