Machine guarding
Register machines and record quarterly guarding inspections; a guarding defect removes the machine from service until the guard is restored, and lapsed inspections escalate automatically.
The Machine Guarding module tracks machines against OSHA 29 CFR 1910.212 — periodic inspection of point-of-operation guards, nip points, rotating parts, and e-stops. Each machine runs on a 90-day (quarterly) inspection cycle, and a guarding defect removes the machine from service until the guard is restored.
Register a machine
- Under Register a machine, choose the site and enter the asset tag, description, and location. The location field pulls from your site's saved areas, so machines stay grouped by where they actually sit on the floor.
- Tick Amputation hazard (point of operation) when the point of operation can amputate — presses, shears, saws (1910.212(a)(3)). It surfaces a red amputation hazard badge in the Status column and raises the severity of any escalation for this machine (see below).
- Click Register. The machine joins the list with its next inspection due date.
Record an inspection
- Filter by Site if needed, then find the machine in the list.
- Click Inspect ✓ to pass it — the 90-day clock rolls forward from that inspection.
- Click Guard defect to fail it. The machine is marked removed (red row) with the defect noted in the Status column. When the guard is restored, click Return to put it back in service.
Follow up
- The due date shows in bold red once it's passed, and the row turns yellow (inspection overdue) or red (removed from service).
- For a machine needing attention, click CAPA to open a corrective action; the row then links to that CAPA so you can track it to closure.
- Decommission permanently retires a machine that's been scrapped or removed from the floor — it drops out of every attention count, but its history stays on record.
- Export register CSV downloads the full machine-guarding register — inspection status,
service state, and recorded defects — from
api/machines/register.csv.
What happens automatically
- When a guarding inspection lapses on an in-service machine, the escalation sweep raises an overdue notification addressed to the Safety Team for that site — "Guarding inspection overdue: (asset tag)" — with a link back to this page. Set who's emailed for that queue under notification routing.
- Every machine removed from service for a guard defect stays escalated until the guard is restored — the exposed point of operation is still on the floor. The notification reads "Machine removed from service: (asset tag)", upgraded to "AMPUTATION HAZARD — machine removed from service: (asset tag)" when the machine carries the amputation-hazard flag.
- Repeated sweeps don't pile up duplicate notifications for the same condition.
Tip: a guard defect and an overdue inspection are different problems — Guard defect documents the hazard and pulls the machine from service; the CAPA tracks the fix.
